In *Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2* (2017), the Guardiansโ€”Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Baby Grootโ€”are hired by the Sovereign race to protect valuable batteries. Rocket’s theft of the batteries leads to a chase, causing the Guardians to crash-land on the planet Berhert. There, Peter’s father, Ego, reveals himself and invites the team to his home planet, while Rocket and Groot stay behind to fix their ship and watch Nebula.
Yondu Udonta, exiled from the Ravagers, is hired to recapture the Guardians. A mutiny led by Taserface results in Yondu being imprisoned along with Rocket. Nebula tries to kill Gamora but eventually reconciles with her. Yondu and Rocket escape with help from Kraglin, and they destroy the ship, killing Taserface.
Ego reveals he is a Celestial who has been searching for Peter to help him activate his plan to terraform planets. He manipulated Peter’s powers and admitted to causing the death of Peterโ€™s mother. Peter breaks free from Ego’s control and fights him. The Guardians, with the help of Yondu, who sacrifices himself to save Peter, destroy Ego and his planet.
The film concludes with Yondu’s funeral, Nebula leaving to pursue Thanos, and the Guardians gaining Mantis as a new member. Mid- and post-credit scenes feature Kraglin with Yondu’s arrow, a new threat from Ayesha, and teenage Groot.
