“Incendies” follows the journey of twins, Jeanne and Simon Marwan, who, after the death of their mother Nawal, are tasked with fulfilling her final wishes as outlined in her will. The will contains two letters: one for their father, whom they believed to be dead, and one for a brother they never knew existed. To deliver these letters, the twins embark on a journey to the Middle East, retracing their mother’s life and uncovering the dark and tragic secrets of her past.
As the story unfolds, through a series of flashbacks, the audience learns about Nawal’s experiences during a brutal civil war in an unnamed Middle Eastern country (suggestively Lebanon). Her life was marked by violence, love, loss, and resilience, and the revelations that Jeanne and Simon discover change their understanding of their mother and themselves forever.
